Star Of Hope Scholarship

$2,000 Four Year Scholarship

A Look into the Past

Shunji Brown graduated in 1994 from R.H.Watkins High School with a plan to attend Xavier University of Louisiana, obtain a degree in chemistry, and become a doctor (physician)...life had other plans. However, one thing held, her community supported and believed she could. They invested in her future through various local scholarships and awards, which were critically important to her attendance at Xavier University of LA. She received a university scholarship as well and was well on her way to realizing her dream.

There was one award that inspired her to vow that when the time was right and resources were stable, she would create an award for youth in her hometown. That time is now.

Shunji’s Tribute to Dr. M. Deborrah Hyde

Dr. Deborrah Hyde’s Beacon of Hope Scholarship Foundation, which was established in 1991, was a gift like none other when received in 1994. Dr. Hyde proved that people like me could become doctors from little ole Laurel, MS, and continue to support its youth. While grateful for all my awards, Dr. Hyde has always been a role model of success that I wanted to emulate. In 2016, I decided that I would apply her impact on me and take the initiative to portray it in our communities. This also provides a network and pathway through funding as well as programs in STEM fields in Mississippi and Tennessee.
